One of my weight loss coaching clients said this phrase during our session over the phone today: “What better victories can we have in life than to control ourselves?”
So true. When you are able to stop giving into urges to overeat and start listening to your head instead of your eyes and stomach, therein lies the key to self-mastery and freedom. In my book Stop Overeating Today!, I discuss how I struggled with overeating and lost my freedom to the addiction. But I was able to retrain my thoughts and actions and eventually gain self-mastery, which gave me great peace of mind. I could go to social events without worrying about going back for seconds and thirds and then going home feeling physically full but emotionally deprived, because I was sick with regret.
Here’s something I’ve noticed about food addiction and self-mastery. Once you learn how to master one addiction, you can use those tools to master others. Because most people addicted to food have other addictive tendencies as well – smoking, alcohol, and spending money. When they feel down, overwhelmed, or out of control, they turn to an addictive behavior to distract them from their feelings.
Tomorrow’s post has a short exercise that I teach all of my life coaching clients that helps people on their journey to self-mastery….stay tuned!
